On this episode of HealthMade Radio Dr. Michael Karlfeldt interviews Dr. Diana Schwarzbein, MD. about hormones affect on the body and your health, and how your daily habits affect your hormones. Her calling to become a physician and to adopt a highly scientific, integrative approach to the practice of medicine was born of personal experience.  As a child and adolescent, she encountered medical problems that were misdiagnosed and mistreated.  For her, this experience underscored the need to think holistically, to educate her patients, and to enable them to engage as a partner in the management of their health.

Dr. Diana Schwarzbein is an endocrinologist, who 20 years ago was one of the first to debunk the low-fat movement in her first book The Schwarzbein Principle, published in 1999. Her principle states that Degenerative Diseases of aging, are not genetic, they are acquired through poor nutrition and lifestyle habits. 

Through her nearly three decades of clinical practice, she has demonstrated that, unless there are glandular issues or the body is already in the state of degenerative disease, instead of using drugs that simply mask symptoms and cause side effects, most health issues can be resolved by focusing on: Nutrition, Sleep, Addressing Stress, Reducing Foreign Chemicals, and proper exercise.

The Scwarzebein Principle Diet shies away from the standard low-calorie, low-fat, low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet. In her research she discovered that a diet made up of butter, eggs, red meat, cream, low-carbohydrate vegetables and a reasonable amount of unrefined carbohydrates are effective in bringing a diabetic’s blood sugar down to an acceptable level in just a small amount of time. Furthermore, the low-carbohydrates diet plan improved the lipids level too.

The program has two phases–healing and maintenance. Unlike other diet programs, the Schwarzebein Principle Diet promotes consumption of good fats and protein and unlimited amount of non-starchy vegetables. Lean meat, fish, eggs, green leafy vegetables, fruits and grains consumed in moderation are also recommended..

Since the publication of her first book, she has written several others, The Schwarzbein Principle 2, and The Program.

A Weston Price review of the book The Schwarzbein Principle should be subtitled “Everything You Wanted to Know About Insulin Resistance, But Were Afraid to Ask.” It is an important antidote to the many books promoting lowfat or low-protein diets for insulin resistance. Schwarzbein links high insulin levels, primarily caused by high-carbohydrate, lowfat diets to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, oxidative stress, depression, eating disorders and obesity.

Her sensible approach to weight loss and general health is a lower carbohydrate, higher fat, moderate protein diet of natural foods. She points out that those who get a lot of exercise, such as athletes, need to eat more carbohydrates for energy. But for those who are more sedentary, excess carbohydrates will cause weight gain.

The great asset of the book is its down-to-earth explanations of complex biochemical processes—the reader is not left confused by endocrinological double-talk.
